A Breakdown of Jarret Yoshida’s Brooklyn Brownstone Interior Design Elements

Our Brooklyn Brownstone renovation project holds a special place in my heart, with each room reflecting a distinct aspect of the home’s history and my design style. From the stunning architecture to the carefully curated flea market and vintage pieces, this loft apartment in Brooklyn showcases the harmony between past and present. I take pride in transforming historic homes like this while preserving their unique character. Working as a New York interior designer, especially on these types of homes, allows me to bring my interior design service to life in both challenging and rewarding ways.

Brownstones are a joy to renovate and decorate, especially when they have such a rich history. Whether a partial update or a full gut renovation, I love moving these homes into the 21st century while keeping their charm intact. This particular project perfectly illustrates the delicate balance between modern updates and classic touches that clients wanted, emphasizing their desired lifestyle and aesthetic choices.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the Brooklyn brownstone interior design elements of a few key rooms from this renovation to give you insight into how I approach such projects:

Brooklyn Brownstone Interior Design Elements: The Living Room

The living room of this Brooklyn Brownstone is where eclectic meets timeless design. Each piece has its own story, making it one of my favorite spaces to work on as a New York City interior designer.

Coffee Table: West Elm
Tic-Tac-Toe: Amazon
Pictures: Housing Works
Frames: Boerum Frames
Couch: Flea market find with Paul Smith fabric
Console: Made Goods
Chairs: Warehouse in Fort Lauderdale exurbs
Mirror (Mid-18th Century acorn detailed gold leaf): Brimfield Antique Flea Market
Vases: Rose Bowl Flea Market
Lamp: Fort Lauderdale Vintage Table Lamp attributed to Tommi Parzinger
Paneling (Meiji Era Japanese oversized screen): eBay – panels depict a nobleman’s procession to Imperial Edo (now known as Tokyo).  I’m also including a link here from 1stdibs to show some other samples of Japanese screens)

This space blends modern comforts with antique treasures, making it both cozy and uniquely curated.

Brooklyn Brownstone Interior Design Elements: Kitchen Renovation

In this Brownstone renovation, the kitchen highlights how a thoughtful mix of custom work and found objects can create an elegant, functional space. As an interior designer, I always seek ways to incorporate personal touches in every corner.

Hardware: Rejuvenation Hardware
Table: A street find on the Upper East Side
Napkin rings and placemats: Made Goods
Cabinets: Custom
Backsplash: Photo by Jarret Yoshida

This Brooklyn brownstone kitchen design exemplifies how practical design elements can also serve as artistic expressions in loft apartments and Brownstone renovations alike.

Brooklyn Brownstone Interior Design Elements: The Bedroom

The bedroom combines warm tones and classic pieces, creating a serene retreat while maintaining the historic charm of this New York Brownstone. Brooklyn brownstone doors can be quite beautiful.  Here are some details about that and other elments in the bedroom:

Mahogany door: Rescued from demolition (this is one of my favorite things to do in such gut renovations!)

Lamp to the right: Vintage mid-century blown glass crystal lamp
Art hangings: Rose Bowl Flea Market and Clignancourt Market in Paris
Bedding: West Elm and Brooklinen
Bed frame: CB2
Bird: Made Goods
Lamp to left: Target
Nighstands: 1stdibs
Picture top left: eBay
Picture top right: Scarlett Bailey

Each piece in this bedroom tells a story, blending the old with the new, and emphasizing the importance of personal touches in interior design.

Collaboration with Crystal Sinclair Designs

The project involved a collaboration with Crystal Sinclair Designs, who brought their expertise in interior design to the table. The team worked closely with the clients to understand their needs and preferences, and to create a space that was both functional and beautiful. The result was a cohesive and stylish design that reflected the clients’ personal style, while also honoring the historic character of the building. This collaboration ensured that every detail was thoughtfully considered, resulting in a home that is both timeless and contemporary.

Feeling it in my Gut…Renovation!

Working on this Brooklyn Brownstone renovation project was a serious labor of love. And I so hope this design breakdown gives you a better sense of how I approach them. If you’re looking for an interior design service that combines timeless elements with modern flair, whether it’s for a loft apartment or a Brownstone, I’d love to collaborate with you.
