Importance of Womankind: Design for Social Change

Interior plants

Interior design can be a stand alone work of art. However, like most other things in life, our work can bring so much more fulfillment when paired with volunteerism and a push for social change. We understand struggle, which is why it is so important to give back. The work we do at Jarret Yoshida, Inc. is no exception, which is why we are working with Womankind for social change.

Womankind was founded in 1982 as the New York Asian Women’s Center. Since then, it has become a front runner in supporting survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual violence among other things. The staff and volunteers have combined expertise in 18+ Asian languages and dialects giving it deep cultural awareness of the individual situations our brave survivors face.

I have been an ally and board member of Womankind for the past five years. I’m able to bring my expertise in construction and interior design to aid in the renovation and upkeep of their secret locations that provide emergency shelter for victims, survivors, and those in need. This can range from installing solar panels, to lighting upgrades, to complete redesign of interiors to make them more suitable for housing trauma survivors.

Before starting my firm, I worked for a variety of social organizations. Notably, I spent my early career fundraising to support educational programs at the Smithsonian, civil rights-related work  at the Human Rights Campaign, and the National Minority AIDS Council. Our commitment to the arts and charity is a consistent part of our interior design work.

We understand that everyone comes from their own unique background and wanted to share a more personal side of the work we do at Jarret Yoshida, Inc. In the age of 30-second trending videos, the element of design is essential in drawing attention to positive change and community-driven initiatives. As we enter into a new decade, the importance of charity and social work rests on everyone, not just those who have a degree in it.
