Wallpaper vs. Paint: A New York Interior Designer’s Guide

wallpaper-vs.-paint

As a New York interior designer who’s spent years transforming everything from sleek Manhattan apartments to cozy brownstones in Park Slope, I’ve seen how a simple design choice—like whether to use wallpaper or paint—can become a surprisingly big decision.

When clients ask me, “Which is better: wallpaper or paint?”, my answer is always: It depends. But don’t worry, I’m not going to leave you hanging like wallpaper (excuse the pun).

So let me help you think through the wallpaper vs. paint debate and help you decide which is best for your space, your lifestyle, and your budget.

Wallpaper vs. Paint: What’s the Big Deal?

Walls are the backdrop of every room. They influence mood, perception of space, and overall style. Changing your wall treatment is one of the easiest ways to refresh your home, especially in a dynamic city like New York where our spaces double as everything—from living rooms to work zones to private sanctuaries.

So, when choosing between wallpaper vs. paint, the stakes can feel high. That said, understanding the pros and cons of each option can make your decision much easier—and even fun.

Wallpaper: Personality, Pattern, and Polish

Upsides of Wallpaper

Wallpaper has come a long way since the retro florals of the ‘70s. Today, it’s bold, artistic, eco-conscious, and often surprisingly durable.

For instance:

  • Vinyl wallpaper is ideal for high-traffic areas or spaces where moisture is a concern, such as bathrooms or kitchens.
  • Non-woven wallpaper, made from a blend of natural and synthetic fibers, is breathable, easy to install, and better for the environment.
  • Paper wallpaper still reigns for ornate designs and rich texture, making it a favorite among clients who want a timeless or artisan feel.
  • Fiberglass wallpaper, though lesser known, is a fantastic option for covering imperfect walls or areas prone to impact. It’s also paintable.

Besides the variety of materials, wallpaper allows for dramatic pattern, texture, and color play. In fact, some designs almost resemble murals or fabric. It’s a great way to add character—especially in smaller rooms, entryways, or powder rooms where one bold statement goes a long way.

Moreover, as a New York interior designer, I love using wallpaper to create a sense of depth and architectural interest in otherwise often boxy city apartments.

Downsides of Wallpaper

That said, wallpaper isn’t for the commitment phobic. While today’s peel-and-stick versions make removal easier, many traditional wallpapers still require significant effort to remove or replace. Additionally, professional installation is usually recommended—especially for high-end or textured papers—which can drive up costs.

Humidity and moisture can also be an issue with certain types of wallpaper. Even in well-ventilated bathrooms, steam can eventually cause edges to curl.

Paint: Simplicity, Speed, and Versatility

Why Paint Still Holds Its Own

Paint is the ultimate in instant gratification. For budget-conscious renovators or quick updates, it’s hard to beat. Whether you want a crisp white gallery wall or a deep jewel-toned den, paint gets the job done fast.

Here’s why many of my clients choose paint:

  • It’s relatively inexpensive.
  • It can be applied quickly.
  • It’s easy to touch up or change.
  • It doesn’t require special installation tools or training.

Furthermore, paint is ideal for renters or anyone who likes to change their space often. In my own Brooklyn loft, I’ve repainted the bedroom at least three times in the past five years—sometimes just to match the seasons.

There’s also an enormous variety of paint finishes—from matte to eggshell to high-gloss. For example, a high-gloss navy blue can feel as sophisticated as lacquered wallpaper, especially with proper lighting.

But Paint Isn’t Always Perfect

Of course, paint has its own limitations. While it offers solid color, it doesn’t provide the same depth, texture, or detail as wallpaper. Faux finishes can imitate this to a degree, but they often require a skilled hand (and still won’t achieve the tactile quality of real wallpaper).

Another drawback is that paint tends to scuff or chip more easily, especially in high-traffic zones. That means you may find yourself retouching corners and doorways more often than you’d like.

Aesthetic Considerations: Wallpaper vs. Paint by Room

Let’s get practical. Here’s how I advise my interior design clients to think about the wallpaper vs. paint decision, room by room.

  • Living Room: Paint works well for open-concept spaces or when you want artwork to shine. Wallpaper adds polish to accent walls or formal sitting areas.
  • Bedroom: Wallpaper behind the bed can act as a headboard substitute or give a boutique hotel vibe. Conversely, soft-toned paint offers calm and flexibility.
  • Dining Room: This is a great place to go bold. Wallpaper with metallic or textured elements can feel luxurious. Dark paint can create intimacy.
  • Bathroom: Moisture is a factor. Vinyl wallpaper works if you want pattern; otherwise, semi-gloss paint is your safest bet.
  • Home Office: Wallpaper adds professionalism and polish to Zoom backgrounds. Paint keeps things low-key and adaptable.

Maintenance and Durability

In terms of upkeep, paint wins on convenience, but wallpaper wins on longevity. High-quality wallpaper can last up to 15 years or more, whereas paint generally starts to dull or chip within 3–5 years—even sooner in high-traffic areas.

That said, if you’re someone who tires of a look quickly or is planning to move in a few years, paint gives you flexibility without a long-term commitment.

Environmental Impact: A Growing Concern

I also consider sustainability, particularly with clients who make it clear that is a priority. Low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints have become standard, and many wallpaper manufacturers now offer eco-friendly, PVC-free options using water-based inks and recycled materials.

(Here’s a tip: If you’re aiming for a greener home, research both paint and wallpaper brands carefully. Here’s a resource on Eco-friendly paints.)

Budget: The Bottom Line

Let’s talk money. Generally speaking:

  • Paint costs less upfront—both in materials and labor.
  • Wallpaper is more expensive, especially if you’re hiring a professional.

But, wallpaper’s long lifespan can make it a better value over time. It’s an investment in your space’s visual impact and overall ambiance.

So…Wallpaper or Paint?

To sum up, here’s a quick breakdown:

Factor Paint Wallpaper
Cost Lower Higher
Durability 3–5 years 10–15+ years
Style Options Solid colors, some texture Endless patterns, textures
Install/Remove Easy to apply and change Requires more time and precision
Eco-Friendly Options Yes (low-VOC) Yes (non-woven, recycled)
Best for Flexibility, budget, speed Statement walls, elegance, drama

Final Thoughts from a New York Interior Designer

Obviously from all I noted above, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the wallpaper vs. paint question. It’s about balance—between your aesthetic, budget, lifestyle, and timeline. Some of my clients use both, combining paint with wallpaper accents to get the best of both worlds.

So next time you’re staring at a blank wall and wondering what it could become, ask yourself: Are you looking for bold personality or subtle charm? Do you want quick impact or long-term elegance?

If you’re still unsure, reach out! I’d love to help you find the perfect solution for your space.  I’ve helped countless clients choose between wallpaper vs. paint—and I’d be thrilled to help you too.
